Top 10 Reasons To Be Happy You’re a Doctor

In a recent posting to Physicians Practice, Abigail Beckel and Shirley Grace put together a list of reasons why physicians have a great job and why you should be proud of it! Here’s a brief recap of their Top 10.

10. You get to do cool things most people will never have the chance to do. From surgeons who cut, to psychiatrists who talk, each specialty extends and saves lives of patients. Very cool.

9. Your medical training prepared you for a successful life. All the rigors of med school gave you discipline, decision-making skills and other important attributes to enhance your life.

8. You relieve more than just physical pain. You know this to be true–just giving a smile or a pat on the back can make a patient “feel” better. An extra moment to listen, make eye contact–personal interaction to help the patient heal.

7. You have influence. You are a respected, smart, successful person who can use your influence to help the community and the world. Your words carry weight and your help is appreciated.

6. You have actual job security. Even with the recession, doctors are needed in every area of the world. You can work wherever and whenever you wish.

5. You’re free to move about the country, as a certain airline says. Point to a place on the map and chances are you can find a position near that spot. Your skills travel well.

4. You can diagnose yourself. With your knowledge, you can monitor your own health and make educated decisions as conditions occur.

3. You’re never bored. Just when it starts to be routine in the office, someone presents with something you couldn’t begin to imagine.

2. You’re always in vogue. Starched white lab coats, embroidered with your name. Stethoscope around your neck. Scrubs with a head covering. Classic.

1. You make a difference. Despite the long hours and the difficult cases and the administrative nightmares, you can look in the mirror and know that you have made a difference.
